Institutum Historicum Societatis Iesu (IHSI) - A publishing tradition in Jesuit history since 1894
IHSI is the publishing imprint for five book series, and a bi-annual journal, producing peer-reviewed scholarly works in Jesuit history from around the world.
Located in central Rome, IHSI operates as part of the Roman Jesuit Archive (Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu - ARSI)
, whose mission is to preserve, provide access to, and promote Jesuit sources and history for international scholarship.

Institutum Historicum Societatis Iesu (IHSI) publishes original research on all aspects of the history of the Society of Jesus, including all regions where the Society has operated, and all fields of Jesuit endeavour through its long history of almost 500 years. We aim to publish works that touch on the universal history of the Society of Jesus, either explicitly, or in terms of the wider consequences that a focused study might have for our understanding of Jesuit history in its broadest sense. We are particularly interested in publishing work that conducts critical analysis of original documents within the context of current literature in the field, with the aim of providing valuable, even new, perspectives in any given field of research touching on Jesuit history.
What would become the inaugural series, Monumenta, began in
Madrid in 1894 and transferred to Rome in 1930. In that year, Superior General
Wlodimir Ledóchowski founded the Jesuit Historical Institute (Institutum
Historicum Societatis Iesu – IHSI), at whose heart was the Scriptorium, where
resident Jesuit scholars provided much of the material for scores of Monumenta
volumes and IHSI’s other book series, as well as its biannual journal, Archivum
Historicum Societatis Iesu (AHSI).

Located within ARSI, IHSI continues its service to Jesuit history through
receiving submissions from scholars internationally—both Jesuit and
non-Jesuit—maintaining the highest academic and production values through a
peer-reviewed publication process, and through the appointment of a rotating
Advisory Board of experts in the field of Jesuit history.
IHSI seeks submissions from as many diverse regions and
perspectives as possible – especially those least represented in mainstream
academic publications.
IHSI thus works to continue its distinguished track record in Jesuit history
and build on it, through its publication—since 1932—of the journal AHSI and
five book series: critical editions and translations in Monumenta Historica
Societatis Iesu— to which was added, from 2005, Monumenta’s Nova
series—monograph studies and essay collections, in Bibliotheca Instituti
Historici Societatis Iesu; the series dedicated to research tools and source
aids, Subsidia ad historiam Societatis Iesu, and, from 2023, IHSI Global,
dedicated to viewing Jesuit history through a global lens.
Beginning in 2023, in order to increase its online presence
and access for researchers worldwide IHSI has partnered with the Polanco
Foundation, an organization created within the General Curia of the Society of
Jesus with the aim of promoting the cultural and historical heritage of ARSI.
